The EU’s upcoming Circular Economy Act aims to boost recycling, reuse, and repurposing of construction and demolition waste, including mineral wool insulation. Recyclable waste going to landfill will become impossible, making proper recovery, handling and transport essential. With its new verification service, the Belgian Construction Certification Association (BCCA) offers a valuable tool to contribute to mineral wool insulation recycling and regulatory compliance.
Mineral wool fibres meeting the low biopersistence criteria of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Note Q are exonerated from EU classification and, as a result, not considered as hazardous. EUCEB, an association founded by mineral wool manufacturers, developed a voluntary certification scheme attesting that a manufactured fibre has a composition within the chemical range of an exonerated reference fibre. EUCEB certification is handled by the independent BCCA.
In coordination with EUCEB, BCCA has now launched a verification tool to complement the industry´s product stewardship loop of EUCEB certification, Safe Use Instruction Sheets and pictograms for responsible handling.
• The results of a chemical analysis are put into the tool´s digital interface
• The waste sample´s chemical composition is compared with the available database of Note Q compliant fibres approved for this purpose
• A comparison report is sent
> Get clarity on the Note Q status of mineral wool waste if documentation and construction year cannot confirm it
> Ensure proper handling during recovery and transport
> Increase recycling, reuse and repurposing – and save disposal costs
> Show leadership in circular construction.
